Having identified lines of dimeter (two metrical feet) and trimeter (three metrical feet) in the play, we now move to tetrameter, a line of four metrical feet. Tetrameter is the metre used by Orlando for his love poetry written to Rosalind, and, in a neat parallel, by Phoebe when writing her love letter to Ganymede. The metre is mostly catalectic trochaic tetrameter – a series of four trochees, with the final unstressed syllable missing in most lines (/u /u /u /), with some lines of iambic tetrameter. We hear two of Orlando’s poems in 3.2 – the first read by Rosalind and the second by Celia; both are intentionally bad and over-written:
